Celebrating Heritage

Celebrating our Heritage honours our elderly population & reminds us of where we come from. We started Senior Active’s The Heritage Cooking Class proudly celebrating Singapore’s heritage. Follow the story of The Heritage Cooking Class; from passion to action.

When the Heritage Cooking Class started, it began as an initiative to help the elderly population by providing employment opportunities for seniors to share their beautiful cooking talents with the wider public. Later did I realise that these classes were helping me too, bringing me back to my roots. One morning, preparing ingredients for a cooking class, I followed our mak ciks (aunties) to the wet market. It was refreshing walking into the market, getting stung by insects & bargaining over the price of tempeh (fermented soybeans). Usually I’d walk into the supermarket, grab an already wrapped bunch of ingredients and pay at the counter with little interaction. Instead at the wet market, I felt my senses awakening and my fast paced lifestyle taking a breather as I followed the calm footsteps of our mak ciks, touching & smelling ingredients for signs of freshness.

Celebrating our Heritage honours our elderly population & reminds us of where we come from. It is what makes us uniquely beautiful in our own ways. Thus, we started Senior Active’s The Heritage Cooking Class proudly celebrating Singapore’s heritage. The class has been growing since it started in 2015, warmly welcomed by the public. In 2016, we have been selected to be part of the coveted UNFRAMED's business incubation program in partnership with organizations including DBS foundationIDA Labs and Onemaker Group . UNFRAMED facilitates the entrepreneurial development of a selected team of entrepreneurs committed to making a real change for Singapore's elderly population. Our team believes that to help the elderly population, we have to celebrate them. Together with our seniors, we carry our heritage with pride welcoming people to the warm culture through the love of traditional dishes.

UNFRAMED’s incubation program will culminate in a pitching day, this July, where we will have the opportunity to share about what we do in front of all major funders in Singapore. Follow the story of The Heritage Cooking Class; from passion to action.

What's up next?

I am joining the mak ciks to make Sayur Lodeh & will be meeting with the Centre for Ageing Research and Education (CARE) on measuring social impact. Catch me on my next updates!

Wear heritage with pride!
